This painting is a deeply evocative work that serves as both a poignant artistic observation of her mother's struggle with early Alzheimer's disease, as well as a means of coming to terms with the profound and devastating effects of the disease.
Through her skillful use of color, form and composition, the viewer is drawn into a world of confusion, where identities are blurred and memories fade away. The painting masterfully depicts a sufferer who is trapped in their past life, unable to fully grasp the present highlighting the disorienting nature of Alzheimer's disease.
The subject of the piece, the artist's mother, is depicted with her head wrapped in a bandage, gazing off into the distance with a haunting sense of unrecognition in her eyes. The glass house surrounding her head serves as a powerful metaphor for the past and present existing simultaneously, further underscoring the dizzying effects of the disease. Small miniature alchemical figures, serving as symbols, are unevenly distributed throughout the canvas, adding to the chaotic nature of the painting, while also alluding to a lack of spatial awareness.
Amidst this confusion, the mother clings onto her femininity, symbolized by the mother's milk, a powerful and timeless symbol of nurturing and care. Additionally, atop her head, a white orb, symbolizing divine power, can be seen. This can be perceived as a beacon of hope for divine healing or as an acceptance of divine order.
Ultimately, the artist's work highlights the complex intersection of faith, illness, suffering, and powerlessness, resulting in one of the most symbolically rich and emotionally resonant artworks she has created to date.
